This is the second part of the photo-report of our citytrip to Istanbul, in May 2004. As you've already read on the previous page, we're now at the Suleyman Mosque.

Here too, we noticed how enormous the actual space inside the Mosque was. The distance from the floor to the top is exactly 2 times the diameter of the cupola. Because of that, it looks even bigger. Just like in the rest of the city, we saw men playing the very popular game backgammon. It seemed like whenever there's a bit of spare time, the game is played.

We really enjoyed the Bazar area, where there was so much to see and hear! All kinds of people where looking for bargains and the shop-owners were shouting about the quality of their goods. Everything is sold here: from fabrics to herbs, to chicks and rabbits, to shoes and shampoo. So if you're looking for cheap shoes or a nice gift, you're likely to find it here. We were entertained here for hours. Wandering between the shops and watching people while eating some nuts on a staircase.

It's also very busy around and on the Galatabridge, where hundreds of fisherman tried to catch that one big fish. South of the bridge, you'll find the New Mosque. Don't be misleaded by that name, because it was build around 1600.

In Istanbul, there are a lot of Shoeshiners. Sadly some of them aren't very honest. After offering us a free shoeshine in exchange of some nuts, the men asked us 20 euro's per person. We didn't agree with a price like that, we gave them one euro each after a lot of "negotiating" (read: saying no for many times.).

One of the most magnificent views on the Bosphorus, Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara is found on the Galatatower.
The Dolmahace Palace is guarded 24 hours a day. The gate that was only used by the Sultan and his ministers was also guarded by uniformed palace guards.
The Basilica Cistern (built in 532) was once used as a waterstorage for the city. Water was transported for 19 kilometers from the Belgrade-forrest to be collected inhere. Nowadays there's only a small layer of water and the storage is beautiful enlightened. Very special are the two Medusa's heads in the back of the cellar. Many stories are told about their origin and why one of them is upside down and the other is rotated 90 degrees.

The San Lorenzo shipwreck ran ashore a couple of years ago. Some people use it as a diving board nowadays, we saw it as an occasion to take more pictures!
