Unfortunately we had not such a nice weather when we went to Amsterdam on March 13th 2004 for some nice photos. Nevertheless we tried to make something good of it, and these are the results of a one-day-Amsterdam-tour.

Central Station was designed in 1889 by architect Cuypers. Of the two clocks in the gable the left one shows the wind direction and the right one shows the time.
The Beurs van Berlage, former Amsterdam market, was named after its architect H.P.Berlage. The building from 1903 is situated at Damrak, in the centre Amsterdam.
"Amsterdammertjes"are the cast-iron little poles that keep you from parking where it is not allowed. There are more than 80.000 "Amsterdammertjes"in the capital.

Everywhere in Amsterdam you can find beautiful gable stones. There are almost as many as you can find pigeons at the Dam! The royal Palace is built as the town hall in 1655 by architect Jacob van Campen. The Dutch Royal family lives in The Hague and only uses this palace for official functions. The National Monument is erected for the people who died in world war 2.

Throughout the world, Amsterdam is known for its beautiful stately canal houses. Amsterdam got its nickname "Venice of the north" because of 90 canals and more than 1000 bridges in the city. Most canals were dug in the 17 th century to create waterways to transport goods.

The oldest bridge is from 18th century, but there are still a lot of nice old bridges to be seen in the old city centre. De oudste brug dateert uit de 18de eeuw, maar er zijn volop mooie, ouderwetse (ophaal) bruggen te vinden in het centrum.
after world war 2, there was a shortage of houses, that's why people started living on houseboats. Nowadays there are around 2500 houseboats.

The old church was consecrated to Saint Nicholas in 1306.
The Waag dates back to 1488 and functioned as one of the city gates. For a long time this building used to house several guilds, amongst them the guild of surgeons.
