 During our visit to Istanbul in 2004 they still used the old(er) Lira in Turkey, which was slightly less worth than the new one, as you can see on the picture.
 Ten tijde van ons bezoek aan Istanbul in 2004 was de oude(re) Lire nog in gebruik, die een ietsie pietsie minder waard was, zoals je op de foto ziet.

Because of the differences in landscapes Turkey has many different climates as well. The south coast is not too hot during the summer and mild in winter time. In winter it's raining a lot. The north coast is much cooler and it's raining a lot during the whole year. The eastern part of Turkey has cold winters but hot summers.
Door de vele verschillende landschappen kent Turkije ook sterke verschillen in het klimaat. Aan de Zuidkust is het in de zomer niet te warm en in de winter niet te koud. Wel valt er in die periode veel neerslag. De noordkust is koeler en er valt het hele jaar door geregeld neerslag. Het oosten kent strenge winters en hoge zomertemperaturen.

The roads in Istanbul are most of all very crowded, but in good condition. It will probably be better to make sure you don't have to drive your own car here during the evening rush-hour. Everybody drives fast in the narrow streets and there is a lot of hooting. We don't know how the roads are in the rest of Turkey, but there must be 60.700 km of asphalt and another 172.000 km of hardened roads.
De wegen in Istanbul zijn vooral erg vol, maar op zich in een goede staat. Tijdens de spits kun je beter zorgen dat je niet in je eigen auto hoeft rond te rijden. Er wordt hard gereden over te smalle rondwegen en veel getoeterd. Enkele bekende verkeersaders zitten dagelijks weer helemaal verstopt. Hoe de toestand van de wegen in de rest van Turkije is weten we niet, maar in elk geval is er 60.700 km geasfalteerde weg en 172.000 km verharde weg.

In Istanbul there are plenty good and not too expensive hotels close to the major touristic areas. When you visit the popular south coast of Turkey for a vacation on the beach it will be no problem to find a hotel or apartment, but it will be hard to find a nice and cosy place close to a quiet beach. One ugly concrete-construction is built right next to the other. But there are still nice places just a little behind that coastline, especially in the area between Izmir and Marmaris.
Er zijn genoeg goeie hotels te vinden in Istanbul en voor heel btaalbare prijzen, vooral in de directe omgeving van de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden. Ook langs de populaire zuidkust, waar veel zonaanbidders te vinden zijn, zal het niet veel moeite kosten om een betaalbaar hotel of appartement te vinden. Het zal echter wat lastiger worden als je op zoek bent naar een leuke en sfeervolle plek aan een rustig strandje. De ene hoogbouwflat na de andere rijst hier namelijk op uit het niets. Maar er zijn nog steeds erg mooie plekken net achter de kustlijn, vooral in de omgeving tussen Izmir en Marmaris.
> Particularities | Bijzonderheden
Keep in your mind that you're visiting a country where a lot of muslims are living. The culture of those people doesn't allow women to wear some of the western clothes like miniskirt and shirts with the shoulders uncovered. Always bring a shawl that can cover your hair, you might run into a beautiful mosque that's really worth a visit. For the rest: don't act too familiar and be respectful, then everybody shall treat you with respect and in a friendly way as well.
Wees jezelf ervan bewust dat je een Moslimland bezoekt en dat de cultuur van de mensen in Turkije het niet toestaat dat vrouwen er te bloot bijlopen. Neem altijd een doek of sjaal mee, waarmee je je hoofd kunt bedekken, mocht je onverwacht een mooie moskee tegenkomen die je graag wil bezoeken. Minirokjes en topjes met spaggettibandjes worden hier niet gewaardeerd. En verder: bewaar gepaste afstand en de mensen zullen jou ook vriendelijk en met respect behandelen.
