In July 2002 we went to the Italian Lake of Garda. It was our first time to visit Italy. We were staying in Toscolano Maderno for one week. Toscolano is on the left shore of the lake, and the environments are not as capricious as at Riva del Garda in the north, but there are still some nice mountains to go for a walk. The total Garda-lake is 50 kilometers long, and all around the lake it's very busy by tourists in summer. On the left shore it was not as crowded as on the right shore where the big lunaparcs are situated.

On the first photo you see the hinterland of Toscolano, where we went for a mountain-walk along the river, that led us to a waterfall on top of the mountain. In Salo it's nice to go for an evening walk along the harbor and shops on the shore of the lake. In Riva del Garda we visited the 100 meters high waterfall (rain coat is necessary) and walked through the old town center with colorful houses and small town gates everywhere.

In Arco there is an old castle-ruin to visit on top of a very steep rock. You should bring some extra air in a bag to reach the top (especially when you want to get up at 2 in the afternoon like we did) :-), but you have a splendid view up there. In Sirmione, which is a peninsula, we liked the old town with its castle and the ruins of Roman public-baths. In summer season it takes some time to get there, but Verona is worth a visit as well. The old town has beautiful buildings, like the arena and Roman theatre. Don't forget to visit Romeo and Julia's houses and Julia's tomb. A great view you have from the hill behind the Roman theatre.
