Since the 16th century there were mills built in the Zaan area using wind and water for several usage. Nowadays there are only 13 mills left in the Zaan area, with 5 of them in Zaanse Schans, from the original 1000. That's how this area became the first industrial area in Europe. The mill on this photo is called: "The Crowned Poelenburg", and in the background you can see a bit of the next one: "The Cat".
Sinds de zestiende eeuw werden er in de Zaanstreek molens gebouwd waarbij wind en water benut werden voor alerlei toepassingen. Er staan nu nog slechts 13 molens in de Zaanstreek, waarvan 5 op de Zaanse Schans, er zijn er in totaal meer dan duizend gebouwd. Zo werd dit gebied het eerste industriegebied van Europa. De molen die we op deze foto zien is "De Poelenbrug", met in de achtergrond nog een stukje van de volgende molen: "De Kat".
