During our first visit to Istanbul in 2004 they still used the old(er) Lira in Turkey, which was slightly less worth than the new one, as you can see on the picture.
Ten tijde van ons eerste bezoek aan Istanbul in 2004 was de oude(re) Lire nog in gebruik, die een ietsie pietsie minder waard was, zoals je op de foto ziet.

Because of the differences in landscapes Turkey has many different climates as well. The south coast is not too hot during the summer and mild in winter time. In winter it's raining a lot. The north coast is much cooler and it's raining a lot during the whole year. The eastern part of Turkey has cold winters but hot summers.
Door de vele verschillende landschappen kent Turkije ook sterke verschillen in het klimaat. Aan de Zuidkust is het in de zomer niet te warm en in de winter niet te koud. Wel valt er in die periode veel neerslag. De noordkust is koeler en er valt het hele jaar door geregeld neerslag. Het oosten kent strenge winters en hoge zomertemperaturen.

Info is from 2012! Every visitor is obliged to buy a Turkisch visa on arrival. The costs of this visa are around 15 Euros and validity is 1 to 3 months.
Info is van 2012! Bij aankomst in Turkije is iedereen verplicht een visum te kopen. Voor Nederlanders kost dit plakplaatje 15 Euro. Geldigheid van het visum varieert van 1 tot 3 maanden en is afhankelijk van je nationaliteit. Nederlandse paspoorthouders krijgen standaard een 3 maanden-visum.

Keep in your mind that you're visiting a country where a lot of muslims are living. Their culture doesn't allow women to wear some of the western clothes like miniskirt and shirts with the shoulders uncovered. Always bring a shawl to cover your hair, you might run into a beautiful mosque that's really worth a visit. 
For the rest: don't act too familiar and be respectful, then everybody shall treat you with respect and in a friendly way as well.
Wees jezelf ervan bewust dat je een land met een groot aantal Moslims bezoekt en dat hun cultuur het niet toestaat dat vrouwen er te bloot bijlopen. Neem altijd een doek of sjaal mee, waarmee je je hoofd kunt bedekken, mocht je onverwacht een mooie moskee tegenkomen die je graag wil bezoeken. Minirokjes en topjes met spaggettibandjes worden hier niet gewaardeerd. En verder: bewaar gepaste afstand en de mensen zullen jou ook vriendelijk en met respect behandelen.
> Highlights
Istanbul didn't have too many surprises for us in 2008. We'd been extensively strolling around the place four years earlier as well. So expectantly we left for the interior. In Afyon, the elevated fort on that bare rock is a bizarre sight in town. Cappadocia has a lot to offer as well when it comes to landscape, with all its pinnacles, while cities like Malatya and Elaziğ are, according to us, just of average interest.
The Eastern part of Turkey has a lot to offer for the traveler when it comes to culture. In Diyarbakir and Şanliurfa the Middle Ages seem to have passed only recently and Hasankeyf did not yet leave this era behind at all. The golden village of Mardin, built on a rocky slope, is worth a visit as well, but is most definately the less interesting one when compared to Van, with a multiplied number of sights in its vicinity.
At last, don't forget to check out Doğubayazit, offering fantastic possibilities for hiking and mountaineering, with Mount Ararat on barely 10 kilometers distance from the town center.
Istanbul had voor ons in 2008 weinig verrassingen meer. We struinden er vier jaar eerder al eens uitgebreid rond. Vol verwachting vertrokken we daarom naar het binnenland. In Afyon, is het hooggelegen fort op die kale rots in de stad een bizar gezicht. Ook Cappadocië heeft veel te bieden kwa landschap, met al zijn puntige rotsen, terwijl wij steden als Malatya en Elaziğ maar middelmatig interessant vinden.
Het Oosten van Turkije heeft de reiziger veel te bieden op het gebied van cultuur. In Diyarbakir en Şanliurfa lijken de Middeleeuwen nog maar net voorbij en Hasankeyf heeft dat tijdperk nog helemaal niet achter zich gelaten. Ook het tegen een heuvel gebouwde, goudkleurige Mardin is een bezoekje waard, maar kan niet tippen aan de sfeer en veelvoud aan bezienswaardigheden in de omgeving van de stad Van. Doğubayazit tenslotte heeft fantastische mogelijkheden voor wandelen en bergbeklimmen, met de Ararat op amper 10 kilometer afstand van het dorpscentrum.
